How to layer pieces without overdoing it
The rule is simpler than it looks: one piece leads, the rest follow. The hard part is deciding which.
When an outfit looks overdone, it's almost always for the same reason: two pieces of similar size competing for attention. A big necklace and big earrings cancel each other out.
The rule that works is hierarchy. Pick one piece to lead, and let everything else scale down. A statement bib necklace calls for stud earrings. Long earrings call for a delicate necklace, or none at all.
The second mistake is colour. Repeating the exact same shade across three pieces makes it read as a uniform. It works better when pieces share a family rather than a shade: dusty pink on the necklace and raspberry on the bracelet sit together far better than two identical pinks.
And one exception to all of this: sets designed to be worn together. There, the scale and the colour are already resolved, which is exactly why they exist.
