How to choose jewellery to match your neckline

You don't choose a necklace for its own sake. You choose it for what's around it, and above all for where the fabric ends.

The rule that solves ninety per cent of cases: the necklace and the neckline shouldn't end at the same point. If they compete for the same line, both lose.

With a V-neck, a short necklace sitting above the point always works. The usual mistake is choosing one that falls right inside the V, because then the fabric swallows it.

With a bardot neckline or bare shoulders, the statement necklace takes over. It's the one case where a large piece never looks like too much, because there's enough skin to carry it.

With a buttoned shirt, two clean options: tucked in with the top two buttons open, or worn over it but short. A long necklace over a closed shirt catches on everything and shifts around all day.

With a high neck or a jumper, forget the necklace and go for stud earrings. It's the one day when large earrings look their best, because nothing else is competing for attention.
